Shed the Light Nepal’s response to the April 2015 earthquake disaster has been indicative of the Nepali spirit of service above self and positive action in the face of adversity. STL PeaceMakers have leapt into action and are inspirational leaders for the relief and reconstruction program.

Within days of the destructive earthquake a STL PeaceMakers team which included two doctors and five nurses headed out to some of the worst affected areas in Dhading District that the government had not been able to access. These areas included Jamune Chour, Aage Tari, Devi Than, Newar Tol, Mauwa Tar, Pancha Ghare, and Kami Gaun. They took with them tarpaulins, food and medical supplies.

Once back in Kathmandu they formed alliances with Nepal Scouts and underwent further training in First Aid and Earthquake Disaster Inspection and in Construction of houses, huts, toilets etc.

A medical team from Northern International Medical College in Bangladesh joined the PeaceMakers for their next field relief trip to Betrawati and Majuwa in Nuwakot District. The team was also supported by Rotary Club of New Road City Kathmandu, Nepal Scouts, and Rajdhani News Publication. With the extra training and the skills of the Bangladeshis the team was able to achieve much more to support earthquake affected communities. Amongst other things, the PeaceMakers held a large medical camp providing surgical, medical and gynaecological support, helped the community rescue their valuable possessions from their damaged houses, built small cottages for those rendered homeless, built a large two room cottage for the children of the community, and distributed rice and tents.

And this is just the beginning!
