One of the students of the earthquake-damaged Shree Bachchhala Devi Higher Secondary School is 13 year old Nirjala Ghale. Nirjala is in Class 8. Nirjala lives with her parents, two of her grandparents and her sister and cousin. Since the earthquakes in April and May 2015, Nirjala’s day starts at 5:30am when she wakes and prepares for school. After half an hour’s walk she arrives at her school by 6:30am and starts a two hour coaching class.

When Nirjala reaches home after school she helps her mother with her daily tasks such as working in the kitchen, taking the domestic animals to the field, fetching water from the tap, cleaning the house and the surroundings, looking after her younger sister and sometimes taking care of her grandparents who live with her family. Even with all this work, Nirjala finds two hours a day for her studies, doing assignments and preparing for the next day’s classes.
